Week 9

Posted: July 15, 2012 in Uncategorized

On Tuesday, July 10, I had an interview with an African family who just moved to the United States. This is an interesting feature piece. I met at their house and we just hung out in the living room answering questions and having casual conversation. This was from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Afterwards, I met with Tim at Bigby coffee. That went from about 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Later that evening I had more questions for Lauren about Barnabas because the story was due this week. She has been super helpful.  It only took 15 minutes. I finished the Barnabas story that took about another hour and a half to write (since I started it last week).

On Wednesday, I went to Somersault for a day of shadowing which Tim set up for me. It is not exactly a publishing house. They are contracted out by publishing companies for various projects. I arrived at 9:00 a.m. and stayed until about 2:00 p.m. I talked afterwards with Dave Wright from Willow Creek about the Leadership Summit. I just needed some statistics from him and this interview took 30 minutes. Then I called Collette Johnson for the same story because she had an interesting experience at a past Summit and I wanted her input. This was about a 45 minute conversation.

Thursday was the day of a lot of writing. I finished both of the Summit stories. One was an overall about Summit while other one was about a high school Summit. In total, this took about 2 hours and 15 minutes. I really like the regular Summit story. I also finished the Serve story which took about 1 hour and 30 minutes to write.  That evening I also wrote about the African family for two hours.

Friday morning, I received the edits from Tim about those four stories (and about two stories for the Maranatha Conference, which I completed a while ago). It took me about an hour and a half to get all the corrections or find new information I needed. In addition, I researched a little bit more about other leadership conferences for the high school Summit because we needed more content in the story. Writing that and researching took about an hour in total. That afternoon I also wrote up a quick email for the Maranatha Conference to send to Alumni. This took about 15 minutes.

A few of the stories are still being edited (lots of work between Tim and I) but they will be done by the time for the portfolio. Because a couple of the stories are still in the editing process, it didn’t quite make deadline. Any work that I am doing with these right now will not count for my hours. It’ll just be for me and Tim, and I may just continue helping him or the Rapidian out for the rest of the summer because most of those writers do it for experience and not pay, anyway.

Overall, this week was 19 hours and 30 minutes.

Week 8

Posted: July 15, 2012 in Uncategorized

On Monday, July 2, I ALMOST finished the Grammar tutorial. I went through the readings and testes for about two hours. I also sent about an hour sending emails to conference attendees and focusing on social media.

On Tuesday, I met with Tim at KCC at 2:00 p.m. We focused a lot on the SERVE and Barnabas stories and what we want to do with them. The ended at 4:30 p.m. Then afterwards for an hour I did some research about SERVE, which I did not get from earlier interviews. This whole spread is going to be a large piece in the next print edition of WMCN.

On Thursday, I again attempted to contact Orange County Christian Writer’s Conference. I need them for a blog I was hoping to do, and they have not replied to me since I contacted them a few weeks ago. This is the last shot for them. Overall, ten minutes this week. After that, I called Juan, owner of two Guatemalan stores in Grand Rapids to try to set up an interview. One of the stores is new, and I kind of wanted to do a story about the store and its audience within Grand Rapids. Unfortunately, the language was a barrier an issue, and I was not able to do the story. That was about a half an hour phone call. That night, I began writing two stories about SERVE and Barnabas (which will make a lot more sense once you read them). Tim is writing two stories and I am writing two. I did this for about three hours.

Friday morning I took two hours and finished the grammar tutorial. I think that was an educational experience (definitely went through information, which I had not looked at since middle school). I also called Lauren from Barnabas with some follow up questions I had for about 45 minutes. I also worked on both of my Summit Leadership stories (and attempted to call some contacts, which did not work out) for a couple of hours.

Saturday evening, right before this, I put together all my stories from this portfolio thing Tim had me working on last week and put description and week into an excel document. This took about an hour (a lot of re-reading blog posts and emails to be correct).

This all should be 15 hours and 55 minutes.

Week 7

On Tuesday, June 25, I met with Tim at 8:00 a.m. and we headed to LaGrave which is a church downtown. They are a site for SERVE Missions. Tim and I are doing a large spread about this in West Michigan Christian News’s July print edition. I followed their youth group (called Barnabus) to different SERVE mission sites and observed and interviewed people.  Later that day I, once again, took another hour on the English tutorial which I will be finishing soon.

On Wednesday I edited basically everything from last week: blog and two stories. They needed a lot of work and are still in the editing process right now, too. I worked on them throughout the week, not just Wednesday.

Thursday I wrote a second story about the Maranatha Christian Writer’s Conference. It had to be a different angle than the first one I wrote because it is going to a second news outlet, The Rapidian. The Rapidian is also secular so I tried to tone down the “Christian” in the story. This was an interesting task because I had the same information as before but had to rewrite it into a completely new promo story. That is still in editing right now as well. At 5:00 p.m.  I had a meeting with Pastor Santese about the high school Leadership Summit. I am writing two summit stories: adult and high school.

On Friday I tried to contact some sources for future stories (Orange County Christian Writer’s Conference is one) and I set up some future meetings. Later that evening at 8:00 p.m.  I went back to LaGrave to take pictures of their final night which was a worship night. I unfortunately did not have a camera so I had to use a camera phone. It was also really awkward because I weaved in and out of people, crouched right by the stage, took photos of people at weird angles and basically right in their face as they were singing. I feel like they thought I was odd and intrusive (which photographers are sometimes).

Saturday at 6:00 p.m. I took some time to put together a documented list (sort of like a portfolio) for Tim which he asked me to do.
